Application Instructions
If
you're apprehensive about applying the iron on transfers yourself, you can always have a professional
do it for you.
Vendors
that may have a heat press machine include printers, screen printers and embroidery
shops.
Fabrics
that work well with iron on transfers include cotton, wool,
lycra, stretch velour, polyester, nylon, linen, denim and silk.
DO NOT USE ON LEATHER.
1. Apply your iron on heat transfers on a hard flat surface. Don't use a padded ironing board. Use a cutting board or your tile/granite countertops.
2. You'll also need a Teflon sheet or cotton muslin pressing cloth. Both are available at your local JoAnn's Fabric Store.
3. Remove backing from heat transfer and check to see if any of the elements have shifted during shipment. If they have, use tweezers to reposition them.
4. Place transfer on garment/item sticky side down. Lift and re-position if necessary.
5. Place Teflon sheet or muslin pressing cloth on top of design.
6. If your garment is thin, place another muslin pressing cloth or piece of flat cardboard inside garment.
6. Empty iron of any water before application. Set home iron on "Wool" setting. DO NOT USE STEAM.
8. Place pre-heated iron on top of Teflon sheet/muslin pressing cloth. DO NOT MOVE IRON AROUND. Apply equal pressure for 45 seconds. For heavier fabrics, like denim, apply transfer for 60 seconds. For thinner fabrics, like silk, apply transfer for 30 seconds. Place iron side to side across design rather than from top to bottom. With larger transfers, iron one half of design for 30, 45 or 60 seconds (depending on the fabric), and then repeat on the other half of the design.
9. Allow garment to cool. Once it's warm, slowly remove the transfer paper. If elements are not sticking, place transfer back down and re-apply heat. The adhesive is not melting if the design is not sticking. Increase heat to "Polyester/Rayon" setting, and repeat process.
10. Turn garment inside out once transfer paper is removed. Place a pressing cloth or piece of flat cardboard inside the garment over the design. Once again, place Teflon sheet/muslin pressing cloth over design and re-press for 15 seconds. This will help draw the glue completely through the fabric. Allow to cool.
11. Once you've completed the transfer process, test design to make sure all of the elements are sticking well. Use your fingernails to make sure crystals and/or rhinestones and/or metallic nail-heads are properly "stuck". If anything feels loose, re-press it.
12. After proper application, garments are machine wash and dryable. It's best to wash garments inside out. If any elements become loose, heat again with your iron to reactivate glue.
